How to arrive

By car

Coming from Florence you reach a big motorway ring called GRA (Grande raccordo anulare). On the GRA, go in the direction of “Civitavecchia/Fiumicino” until you reach the exit “Uscita 1”. Take the exit towards “Aurelio/Centro/St.Pietro” and follow the road Via Aurelia for about 3 km into the city. From the “Largo T. Perassi” turn right into the Via Aurelia Antica which leads from the “Largo Don L. Guanella” past the Hotel “Crowne Plaza” and the “Deutsche Schule Rom” (No. 397/399) to the German Historical Institute (DHI, No. 391).


By train and public transport

You arrive at Rome’s main station Roma Termini.

From Termini to the German Historical Institute (DHI):
Take Metro Line A in the direction of „Battistini“, get off at “Cornelia” and take the exit “Piazza Irnerio/Via Aurelia”. Then take the bus 889 or 892 (the bus stop is located near the exit in front of a McDonald’s) and get off at the bus stop called “Aurelia Antica/Torre Rossa” (opposite the Deutsche Schule Rom). Cross the street and go left to the entrance of the Deutsche Schule Rom. The German Historical Institute can be reached by crossing the school grounds following the signs indicating its location or by following the Via Aurelia Antica for another 100m.

From the Largo dei Fiorentini (Via Paola):
Take the bus 98 or 881 until the bus stop "Aurelia Antica/Torre Rossa" (opposite the Deutsche Schule Rom). Then follow the instructions given above.


By plane – Transfer options to Rome

Airport „Leonardo da Vinci“, Fiumicino:

With the train FR1 (Ferrovie Regionali):
Departure during the day approx. every 15 minutes, otherwise approx. every 30 minutes from the train station at Fiumicino Airport to the train station “Stazione Trastevere”. Tickets are sold directly at the platform/ticket machine (8€/one way). Get a new ticket for the tram/bus and take the tram line 8 to “Circonvallazione Gianicolense”, from there take the bus 791 to “Piazza di Villa Carpegna” and continue with the bus 98 or 881 to the bus stop “Aurelia Antica/Torre Rossa”. Proceed as described above.

Leonardo-Express:
A nonstop-connection to the train station Roma Termini with departures every 30 minutes from the train station at Fiumicino airport and a travel time of approx. 35 minutes. Tickets are sold online or on the platform/ticket machines (14€/one way online, 15€ on the platform, special reductions for groups of 10 or more people).

By Taxi:
A flat rate of 40€ applies for all taxi rides from the Fiumicino airport to the central area of Rome (for either direction and a maximum of 4 passengers plus luggage), but only for taxis with a Roman license. Official Roman taxis are recognizable by their white colour, the taxi sign on the roof and the identification number on doors, boot and in the passenger cabin.
Attention: The hotels near the German Historical Institute (DHI) are situated outside this area, the taxi rate to these destinations will rise accordingly.


Airport Ciampino:

By bus to Metro-A terminal stop “Anagnina”:
Take a bus from the companies Cotral, Atral or Schiaffini to the metro station “Anagnina” (terminal stop, tickets for the bus ride are sold directly by the driver, approx. 1,20€/one way), take the metro and get off at “Cornelia”. Then proceed as described above (see “by train and public transport”).


By bus-shuttle service to Termini:
The company Terravision offers a nonstop-connection to the train station Roma Termini (departures are linked to flight arrivals) with a travel time of about 40 minutes. Tickets are sold online or directly at the airport (currently 4€/one way).
In addition, also local bus companies like Cotral, Atral and Schiaffini offer direct connections to Termini (approx. 6€/one way, tickets are sold directly by the drivers).


By taxi:
A flat rate of 30€ applies for all taxi rides from the Ciampino airport to the central area of Rome (for either direction and a maximum of 4 passengers plus luggage), but only for taxis with a Roman license. Official Roman taxis are recognizable by their white colour, the taxi sign on the roof and the identification number on doors, boot and in the passenger cabin.
